Prior to the 1949 victory, Meath had never won the Senior All Ireland Championship. In his early years, Fr Tully attended Kentstown National School, St. Finian’s College, Mullingar, and St. Patrick’s College, Maynooth, where he graduated in 1942 and was ordained a priest the following year. He served in a number of parishes in the Meath dioceses before being assigned to Moynalty in 194Meanwhile, he served as County Board Chairman for Meath for 20 years while maintaining his headquarters here. He also served as head coach of the Meath Senior football team during this time.
He was a member of the Navan De La Salles and Seneschalstown GAA Clubs in Meath throughout his playing career. As a member of the Meath players’ trip to Australia in 1968, he helped to organise matches between Gaelic and Australian rules footballers, which eventually culminated in the International Rules Series contests.
